The movie wastes no time wrapping you in pure dread. Five young friends head out to an isolated cabin for a weekend getaway, only to stumble upon an ancient text and an archaeologist's audio recording. When the spoken incantations wake an ancient evil resting in the woods, survival turns into an endurance test.
Sam Raimi's direction is wild, inventive, and dizzying. His famous shaky-cam rigs sweep through the forest at breakneck speeds, putting the audience directly into the perspective of an unseen beast. Bruce Campbell gives a raw performance as Ash Williams, playing a vulnerable, terrified young man long before the character evolved into a quip-slinging action hero.
The film feels grimy, sticky, and completely unhinged. The low budget works entirely to its advantage, lending every creaking floorboard and spurt of homemade fake blood an authentic, nasty edge. It stands as a masterclass in making a huge impact with very few resources.
